When was the last time you had your teeth professionally cleaned? If it’s been more than 6 months, you should call our office as soon as possible to schedule an appointment. We don’t recommend skipping teeth cleanings because they allow us to spot oral health issues before they worsen.

Here’s why our Grand Rapids dentists recommend routine teeth cleanings. We’ll also tell you what you can expect during your first dental cleaning with us.

Why You Need a Professional Teeth Cleaning

Plaque is an invisible film of bacteria that lives inside your mouth. When you eat sugary and/or starchy foods, these bacteria eat the food particles left behind. They then produce an acid that erodes tooth enamel and attacks your gums. Preventing plaque buildup is key to preventing issues like cavities and gum disease.

If left untreated, dental plaque will harden into tartar. Once this happens, only a dental professional can remove tartar. That’s why dental cleanings are so important.

It’s easy to neglect preventive dental care. But routine teeth cleanings will help protect your oral health in the long run. They’ll also help you avoid unexpected costs associated with emergency dental care.

What to Expect During Your Appointment

First, our dental hygienist will examine the inside of your mouth and possibly take X-rays. If they see any serious oral health issues, they’ll alert one of our dentists.

Next, they’ll use a dental tool called a scaler to gently scrape away plaque and tartar from your teeth. The hygenist will then brush your teeth with a gritty toothpaste to polish your teeth. Lastly, the hygienist will floss and rinse your teeth.

Near the end of your appointment, your dentist will examine any X-rays and the inside of your mouth. This is also your chance to ask the dentist about any oral health concerns. If our dentist sees no issues, we’ll prompt you to schedule your next appointment in 6 months’ time.
